How to Show the Ruler in PowerPoint Online (and What to Use Instead)
PowerPoint for the web doesn't include a native physical ruler, but you can still size, align and position objects precisely. Here's what works in the browser, how to turn the ruler on in desktop PowerPoint, and how to measure a slide with an online ruler.
The Problem: PowerPoint for the Web Has No Ruler
If you open a presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint Online (in Microsoft 365 in your browser) and head over to the View tab, you might be surprised: the familiar Ruler checkbox is nowhere to be found.
Unlike desktop versions of PowerPoint on Windows and macOS, the lightweight cloud web application omits the horizontal and vertical margin rulers to keep web rendering fast and lightweight.
1. How to Turn on the Ruler in Desktop PowerPoint
If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription or Office desktop license, you can open the same file directly on your desktop:
- Click the Editing dropdown in PowerPoint Online (next to the Share button) and select Open in Desktop App.
- Once the desktop PowerPoint window opens, switch to the View tab on the ribbon.
- In the Show group, check the box for Ruler (or press Shift + Alt + F9 on Windows).
- Both the horizontal and vertical rulers will appear along the edges of your canvas.
2. What to Use Instead in PowerPoint Online
